How Does TensileDraw Work

Mesh generation

The mesh generation phase is as easy as it is functional: the user has only to define the polyline that will be the perimeter of the structure to be designed. The polyline serves the function of border of the mesh and can be easily drawn by the proper AutoCAD/Rhino command. The mesh border can take on a variety of shapes to meet user requests and an unlimited number of sides, which can also be circular shaped.

3D form calculation

The transition from 2D to 3D geometry is intuitive and even easier. Using AutoCAD/Rhino tools it's possible to stretch mesh borders to the correct position then TensileDraw fix node tool allows anchoring mesh vertexes. If the border shape is particularly complex, 3D projection command is a powerful tool to automatically join the mesh elements to the selected 3D contour.
Running the mesh calculation command TensileDraw will find out the 3D configuration in which every node of the mesh results perfectly balanced.

Form finding

By stretching and re-calculating alternatively, user can quickly and easily change 3D structure shape looking for a fully satisfactory result. Moreover TensileDraw proposes additional tools to make the model more realistic:

  • defined force cables
  • fixed length cables
  • connection nodes to join many meshes into one
  • contour lines for an immediate check of fabric slope value
  • 3D faces to have a realistic visualization of the project
  • geodetic lines that allow the drawing of pattern cut lines on the fabric surface

The elements above can simulate the behaviour of structural elements as ropes, straps and supports. Therefore the 3D mesh is functional to the application of further useful services.

Additional Services

In addition to the software tools described above, ME+C offers some additional services related to fabric work. These services are carried out quickly and easily thanks to the functional well-balanced 3D mesh generated with TensileDraw: pattern cutting, pattern compensation, load and stress analysis. Look at the Services page to get full information on this argument.
